Story – what is the game about?

For those who don’t know, the new chapter takes place right after the events of “Professor Layton and the Unwound Future” (a very fitting and well-received choice).

Layton receives a letter from his loyal assistant, Luke Triton, who, having stumbled upon a bizarre puzzle, asks Professor Layton to join him in Steam Bison, a fantastical version of America where steam-powered technology permeates the setting and gameplay style.

After the release of the Nintendo Switch 2, a new trailer was shown, similar to the previous one, but with some small new details.

Among them, it was revealed that Italian dubbing (present in all the other titles of the series) will be missing… a loss that, honestly, I hope—perhaps a bit naively—might still be added after release.

As for the release date itself, we still don’t know anything: neither a precise date nor even a hint of a possible launch window… and yet, we’re already nearly halfway through the year.

That said, the presence of a demo and well structured trailers gives us reason to be hopeful; perhaps the developers simply intend to surprise us and catch us off guard again, just like they did two years ago with the announcement.

That being said, I must admit the concern remains, and I really hope the release won’t be postponed to 2026.

Final opinion

That said, I’m genuinely excited for this game.

This series is close to my heart, and seeing the return of Professor Layton and Luke on the Switch makes me really happy.

I’m also very curious to see what the puzzles will be like and how the story will unfold.

Unfortunately, after the passing of Akira Tago, even though the puzzles didn’t disappear, their quality declined, and since puzzles are one of the most important parts of the gameplay, this was strongly felt.

For this reason, I truly hope we’ll see improvements in this regard.

In short, my expectations are a little high, but I’ll end up buying it anyway—if only to satisfy my curiosity about this new chapter.
